I joyfully visited the Sydney Flower Market a number of times while I lived in Sydney. It meant an early start and arriving for the buzz of vendors and regulars as the market opened.
One winter morning I rose at 5am, rugged up, grabbed my market basket and headed off solo. Fewer stalls than spring or autumn, but still bounties of blooms and fewer crowds too.
- Set a budget – even a loose one. Mine was $30; I spent $49 (the extra $9 was for greenery, which I don’t regret).
- Get there early – markets open around 5am and wind down by 11am. 5–6am is the sweet spot for atmosphere and selection.
- Take a basket – armfuls of blooms make it hard to navigate, and you’ll dodge a few accidental head-bumps from passing bunches.
So get out there, experiment with your arrangements — trim, rearrange, try new vessels — and enjoy.
