At Serendipity Garden Designs, I regularly collaborate with Tessa Rose Playspace and Landscape Designs to create Natural Playspace Designs for preschool and early learning center playgrounds. In this project, we transformed a lifeless space in Sydney’s Engadine into a vibrant natural playscape for babies to preschoolers. Our goal was to create a dynamic environment where young children could engage their senses, challenge physical abilities, and connect with nature.
Elements of Natural Playspace Design
We incorporated a variety of playful elements to encourage exploration. Timber, a key material for warmth and a natural feel, was used throughout the space. We introduced a dry creek bed with a boat for children to explore, along with a sandstone talking circle to inspire stories and connection. For active play, we installed timber balance and climbing poles, helping children develop coordination and strength.

We also created a digging patch that offers a tactile experience. Children can engage with the earth using their hands and feet, adding to the sensory experience. Multi-surface paths and a timber boardwalk wind around existing trees, encouraging exploration while preserving the site’s natural features. Timber decks provide areas for gatherings, observational play, and imaginative play.
Elements of Natural Playspace Enhancing the Natural Playspace Design with Native Australian Plants
To enhance the space’s natural beauty, we selected child-safe Australian Native plants. These plants not only add visual appeal but also support local biodiversity, further enriching the Natural Playspace Design.
In conclusion, this project demonstrates the power of nature in fostering childhood development. We’re proud to have created a space where children can thrive in this rich, nurturing environment.
